I've been a licensed therapist since 2011. During that time, I've worked with almost every age and walk of life - and one of the most common constants throughout has been routinely watching the person sitting across from me come in, start to open up, feel a certain way, and then fight back the tears they weren't expecting.
Or, the tears they were hoping wouldn't come.
I believe in what I do. I believe in the education I received to be a therapist, and the science behind therapy - but more than all of this, I think one of the most important things we do as therapists is give people a place that it's safe to be a human.
We normalize what it means to just be.
So often, people are taught - directly or inadvertently that the only emotions it's ok to show are joy and anger. Which is a real challenge, because we humans have a whole SPECTRUM of feelings at our disposal.
A while back, I decided it could be useful if there was a book out there to help children (and adults, too) understand that crying is simply as much a part of the human experience as coughing or sneezing - and that every one of the reasons a person may cry is absolutely ok.
Hopefully, this book resonates with you in a way that reminds you whatever reason it is you find yourself crying - it's ok.
Holding in a sneeze doesn't make you healthy.
Holding in your tears doesn't either.
